Helen Green Design

The Lancasters, Hyde Park was a development that drew on London’s most respected design studios including Helen Green Design, Intarya and Katharine Pooley. The latter’s classy white, indigo, sapphire and black lounge colour scheme works well with the living room design’s double-height. The contrasting wall panelling ties the airy room together, focusing the eye on the various areas of the room.

The chosen blue colour shades are just dusky enough to exude a natural appeal, creating a living room design which is calming but avoids being bland. The iconic Party sofa (designed by Edward Wormley) is realised in a charming pale blue which balances the light to dark ratio; a floor lamp constructed of falling rings and abstract table ornaments nod to the Bronze Age, and a full-size rug is adorned with ribbons of amber gold and smudges of inky blues.

In the Chicago living room designJean-Louis Deniot applies a subdued Neoclassical palette of bluish greys and pale mushroom with an update of fresh white to the bones of the room. A pop of rich blue in the form of a velvet sloped arm sofa and contemporary artwork gives the space punch.

Kelly Wearstler

Always inspired by the unique Memphis group, it’s no surprise that everyone’s favourite Maximalist, Kelly Wearstler, knows her way around the colour wheel. All stripes and diamonds and polka dots, this New York pad’s living room colour combination is another example of how girlish colour tones can be transformed with the right accompaniments. Its coral pink colour hues are nothing short of avant-garde when used as leather and paint-splatted upholstery.

Amanda Nisbet

Blue and green should never be seen, except with something in between. Chosen for the front cover of her coffee table book Dazzling Design, this living room design by Amanda Nisbet showcases her prowess in confident colouring. Vibrant lemon yellow contrasts with navy blue and both accent the living room colour scheme’s marbled forest green fauteuils, much in the way they would if mixed together on a colour palette. The trick to such a daring space? Neutral walls, carefully planned zones and appropriate ratios.

Katharine Pooley

Could this living room design be any more sophisticated? It’s a hard task. The chandelier dripping in crystals, the timeless trio of sofas, the mossy sage and olives and brindle hues – it’s all very, very elegant. Katharine Pooley marries a classic arrangement with modern touches to stunning effect.

Greg Natale

Greg Natale – a regular advocate of highly pigmented schemes – strikes again with this mature take on living room design. In a luxuriously edgy scheme, a plum, grey and black palette are accented with Brutalist brass silhouette and retro prints. The statement piece – a curved sofa – is even more enticing thanks to its bold lounge colour choice which is undeniably sexy.

Wendy Labrum

Living room design by Wendy Labrum proves that bold living room colours can be serene too. The colour combination of electric blue and a splash of cranberry works beautifully against the purple-tinged greys of the metallic wallpaper and the silver pod-like coffee tables are absolutely perfect.

Brendan Wong

The colour hues, sometimes considered to be quite saccharine, are anything but when compared with jet black and cool greys. Brendan Wong often creates contrast in his projects by injecting neutral spaces with vibrant accents – emerald green against white, mustard against black, electric blue against the grey. Here the designer proves just how smart pink and purple can be used in living room colour combination.

Campana Brothers with 35 years Of Extraordinary Modern Design

A new exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio) pays tribute to the 35-year career of brothers Fernando and Humberto Campana, ‘Campana Brothers – 35 Revolutions’.

This is a celebration of the incredible work by the duo, whose creative voice stretches far beyond the realms of design. In three and a half decades, the pair have produced works that merge the worlds of craftsmanship, furniture and social outreach, pop influences and the everyday vernacular in ways that have made the studio’s pieces some of the most iconic of contemporary design.

Taking over 1,800 sq m on the second floor of Brazilian architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy’s modernist building.

At the entrance, a wall featuring 1,600 terracotta bricks shaped like an open hand (a nod to traditional Brazilian architecture) greets visitors and conceals the vast display. Inside, the exhibition floor is punctuated by over a hundred columns lined with piassava straw, dividing the space and the studio’s archives into loose themes such as Love, Dreams and Time, each represented by a selection of their most iconic furniture. All of their big hits are included, from the Cadeira Vermelha, the red rope chair inspired by traditional Brazilian Weaving and edited by Edra, to the unmissable chairs composed of stuffed toys (from Disney characters to the figures made by American artist Kaws).

In three and a half decades, the pair have produced works that merge the worlds of craftsmanship, furniture design, and social outreach, pop influences and the everyday vernacular in ways that have made the studio’s pieces some of the most iconic of contemporary design.

‘After 35 years, we still have a daily goal to keep the studio ahead of the curve in the way we think, elaborate and produce design,’ they add. ‘Our next step is to bring our ethos and disruptive approach to support our social design projects with Instituto Campana.’

Remaining a priority is the brothers’ commitment to their home country: ‘we hope to help create a more sustainable production chain, diminish the social and economic gap we have in Brazil, and mostly, show people that with a little bit of self-esteem and confidence, they can build their world with their hands.’ Here’s to the next 35 years.

Impressive Architecture: La Muralla Roja by Ricardo Bofill

The building has a clear inspiration on the popular architecture of the Arab Mediterranean Area. The stunning shades of pink and red, the stairs and circulation spaces are jewel-like blues and indigoes, selected to either contrast with nature or complement its purity.
La Muralla Roja, Spanish for ‘The Red Wall,’ is a housing project completed in 1968 and designed by the top architect, Ricardo Bofill.

Formed like a fortress, the project appears as if it is emerging from the rocky cliffs it sits on. Its organization challenges the increasing division between public and private space through its reinterpretation of the casbah, which is the walled citadel typical of traditional architecture in North African countries.

Characterized by a series of interlocking stairs, platforms, and bridges, this organization is a modern illustration of the circulation in a typical casbah, providing access to the 50 apartments that form La Muralla Roja.

Various tones of red paint cover the exterior facade, accentuating the contrast with the landscape. Stairs and circulation surfaces, on the other hand, are treated with different tones of blue ranging from sky-blue to indigo and event violet, depending on weather the intention is to contrast with the sky or create visually continuity with it.

The Red Wall is best described as a labyrinth, corresponding to a precise geometric plan based on the typology of the Greek cross, having, in this case, arms that are five meters long. The crosses intersect at the service towers, which contain the kitchens and bathrooms. In the words of Taller de Arquitectura , “the geometric basis of the layout is also an approximation of the theories of constructivism, and makes La Muralla Roja a very clear evocation of these.”

Beefbar Paris, fascinating Interior Design by Humbert & Poyet

Close to Champs-Elysées the new Beefbar Paris restaurant opened its doors with a stunning Interior Design project by Humbert & Poyet, the top architects brought to life the richness of this Art Noveau Jewel.

This is the eighth Beefbar to open, joining worldwide branches in locations such as Monaco, Hong Kong and Budapest.

“Each Beefbar is different as they’re inspired by the city or country they’re in, but this one is special – all the inspiration for this project comes from the 19th-century room,” founders of the studio, Emil Humbert and Christophe Poyet

The room is now centred by an olive green and navy blue seating bench, echoing the hue of the foliage depicted on the wall panels. Contrast is offered by red velvet dining chairs that have been placed around brass-edged tables, matching the room’s carved gold pillars.

Monochromatic carpet with a sprig-like motif has also been installed in the atrium, intended as a visual nod to the sunflowers seen on the walls and leafy branches that have been drawn on the ceiling.
